Introduction

Networks connect applications through layers of addressing, routing and communication protocols. Understanding those layers makes a request easier to follow from a browser to a service.

Why it matters

For development and technical support, this helps separate name-resolution, connection and application failures. For security, it provides the foundation for reasoning about exposed services, encrypted connections and network boundaries.

Key topics to explore

  • IP addressing, subnets and routing
  • TCP, UDP and ports
  • DNS resolution and caching
  • HTTP requests, responses and TLS
  • Firewalls and network segmentation

Practice & notes

Possible first exercise: Trace a request to a local application, record its DNS and connection steps, and compare the symptoms of a resolution failure with a closed port.

Future notes will record the setup, observations, open questions and principles learned. This exercise is a starting idea, not a completed assessment.
